Ron Flatter has been an force on the label Traum since he has released with it in 2013 his mega hit „Mantequilla“.
He is also a real DJ and a real human being. He released his 6th EP with TRAUM in September so it was time to do an interview.
• Hi Ron, lets talk about some basic things first. In which city do you live?
I live in the beautiful city of of Halle (Saale) in central Germany.
• When did you start to dj and in which club?
That was about 18-20 years. After a techno party, I was so turned on that I though I have to try this myself. Naturally I acted clumsily as a caveman. Then my brother approached me and told me there is a project where I can learn to dj. I got into the project and got to know people who are up to now still accompany me as a friend. My first real gig took place in the „Turm“ in Halle (Saale).
• What did you do before you started your DJing?
I was a Skateboarder and a Graffiti artist and visited various Hip Hop gigs where breakdance music was played which I really got into. Later after a Skateboard session we decided to go to a techno party and I was totally absorbed. Since then I am addicted to good techno.
• What was your first release?
My first release was a white pressing with the namne of "Playmate" and went through the roof. Then I founded a label Playmate Rec and later changes it in PM Music...
• Have you ever held a residency?
Yes I had several residencies. Right now I have a residency in "Station Endlos" in Halle. Makes me super happy. The guys are fabulous.
• We saw you djing in Cologne...
I DJed there a couple of times the energy was always there. Especially at the Odonion.
• Which are the most important clubs in Germany for you?
There are many but the clubs that shaped me were: Tresor, Kater Blau, Sisyphos in Berlin. The Harry Klein in München or the Docks in Hamburg, in Köln the Odonien.
I my home city Halle it is for example: Station Endlos, Charles Bronson and a couple more.
• Which are you favorite festivals?
Ikarus Festival, Feel Festival, Fusion Festival and many more. Honestly I cannot remember any festivals which i did not enjoy.
• Which was the most bizarre & exciting location you have played at?
The most exciting one was in 2019 playing at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao between Picasso, Monet, Max Liebermann together with Dominik Eulberg. It was a great feeling to have so much classy energy surrounding yourself.
• Which track of yours has created the strongest feedbacks?
This was and still is: Mantequilla!
• When did you start producing?
That was around 2003 but I am not sure. My First release was a collective effort. After that I directly wanted to do everything myself.
• What is important for you when you write music?
I must have a vision for it to work on the dance floor, it must to really take me away. If it does not it goes to the bin. I also must come to a result I could not work on a track for several months . I would loose the flow. A piece of music resembles a feeling and that must be captured within 3 days or so.
• Do you have real traditional studio or something flexible?
I have a studio in the Station Endlos in Halle. I am very happy with it, but don't imagine this studio is full analog synths! Iam much more a VST-Type of guy.
• What do you need to write a good tune?
A good mood. A coffee, and then I am kissed by the muse. Sometimes I need some pressure.
• You became father recently how does this go together?
It changed my life to the better. Still it is more stressful than i had expected. I think one can combine two if you have both feet on the ground. As with every job you do.
• What advice can you give others and what is important when you live a Dj life?
Be consistent and energetic, but still at with humor and do not expect to much from other people. Be lovingly and patient and be able to endure also a defeat.
